Student Life Career Counseling and Support Services has organized a monthly programming series to help students Build Their Path to an extraordinary future.

SPRING SEMESTER SCHEDULE 

JANUARY

Build Your Career Path as a Student Veteran

Are you a student veteran that will be entering the job market soon? This series will help you get prepared for the January 21st career fair and beyond. 

January 14th: Creating a great resume including your military experience: 1:00-2:00 pm, Younkin 220. 

Having trouble adding your military experience to your resume?  This resume workshop will focus on helping student veterans translate their military experience to job application materials, specifically resumes.  We will explore how military experiences can connect to prospective careers through transferable skills and discuss how to market military roles in the job search process.

January 15th: Resume review session: 10:00am-1:00pm, Veterans Lounge Smith Lab 1132A.

The Spring Career Fair is just around the corner. Bring your resume to the vets lounge to have it reviewed by a counselor from CCSS before you meet your future employer. 

January 16th: Learn the Networking skills necessary to get your next opportunity: 4:00-5:00pm Younkin Room 220. 

Want to improve your Networking skills? Attend our Networking workshop focused on helping student veterans enhance their networking skills to build relationships, gain access to opportunities for internships, unique learning experiences and future careers. We will also provide information on how to most effectively use social media to network, tips for informational interviewing and how to seek out ways to reality test career path interests.

January 29th: Veteran Alumni and Student Panel: 4:00-5:30pm Younkin Room 220

Career Counseling and Support Services is hosting a panel of alumni who are also veterans and are currently in, or are soon to join, the work force. The panel offers current veteran students the opportunity to ask these alumni about their experiences navigating veteran services at Ohio State and the process of finding and applying for jobs. Join us and be sure to come with any questions you might have.

January 30th: Veteran and Military Student Dining Etiquette: 6:00-8:00pm Ohio Union Ohio Staters, Inc. Traditions Room

Presented by Student Life Career Counseling and Support Services, Vets 4 Vets and the Office of Military and Veteran Services. This workshop will provide Veteran and Military students the opportunity to learn and practice dining etiquette, as well as education on behavior and attire expected when dining at a professional event.  Dinner will be provided.

FEBRUARY

Build Your Path with a Targeted Personal Brand

February 18th: Panel of Human Resources Professionals: 5:00-6:00pm 220 Younkin Success Center

Interested in learning how to develop a personal brand to aid in your application to post-graduation opportunities?  This panel will feature HR representatives to answer your questions about branding and other ways to market yourself in the job search campaign.

February 19th: LinkedIn Presentation: 4:00-5:00pm 220 Younkin Success Center

LinkedIn has become a necessary tool in building a personal brand. This workshop will provide tips on how to create the ideal LinkedIn profile and use it to network with Ohio State Alumni and beyond. 

February 26th: Networking tips to find your ideal career: 4:00-5:00pm 220 Younkin Success Center

While sending out resumes on job databases can be a good way to find jobs, many jobs go to people that the hiring committee already knows. This presentation will explore avenues to become the person that the committee is thinking about before the job is even posted.

Build Your Path and Explore your Career Options

CANCELED March 18th: Tough Conversations about your next career steps: 4:00-5:00pm 220 Younkin Success Center

Wherever you are in the stage of your career and major exploration and decisions, you will probably be having a conversation about it sooner or later.  In this interactive workshop, you will learn techniques and tips to navigate these interactions and sometimes tough conversations effectively and with confidence.

CANCELED March 19th: Exploring Your Personality and Interests as they relate to career: 4:00-5:00pm 220 Younkin Success Center

One of the first steps in Career Exploration is Personal Exploration. Discovering your personality and interests is a great jumping off point to see which careers might align best with you. In this presentation you will explore your RIASEC code and learn how you can use it to gain information on a variety of careers.

Are you currently making a career decision, exploring majors, or looking for an internship/full-time job?  This workshop will focus on how career values can help you in each of these career-related areas.  In this interactive presentation, we will talk about what career values are, discuss their importance to different areas of career, and participate in activities to define and explore your own career values.

Concerned that you are “stuck” in whatever career path you are currently on? Come talk to our panel of people who have taken a windy road to their current profession. Ask questions about when they knew they wanted something different, how they went about doing it and whatever else is on your mind. You can come prepared with any questions that are on your mind or just to listen – hope to see you there.

Is graduate school in your future? Gather information, explore your options and determine your next steps for graduate or professional school throughout the month of September.

September 10th: The Graduate and Professional School Expo, The Ohio Union Performance Hall and Grand Ballroom 12:30 to 4:00

September 10th: Ask the Experts Graduate Admissions Panel led by Carolyn Morales the Director of Diversity and Recruitment Initiatives at the Graduate School, The Ohio Union Traditions Room, 12:00 to 1:00

September 19th: Graduate and Professional School Student Panel led by Max Steele and Josh Grashin, Younkin Success Center Room 220, 4:00 to 6:00

September 20th: Mock Multiple Mini Interview event in association with Arts and Sciences Center for Career and Professional Success, ASC honors advising and Pre-health Advising. 

September 24th: Tips for Applying to Graduate School as a First Generation College Student, Younkin Success Center Room 220, 4:15 to 5:15

OCTOBER

Build your Path as an International Student
Focus on career planning by learning job searching and application skills for the American job search. In partnership with the Office of International Affairs.

Join Student Life’s Career Counseling and Support Services and the Office of International Affairs for a 7-week career counseling workshop series.

NOVEMBER

Build your Path and Accept Your Fears
Facing a tough decision on your path? Learn to break through common barriers such as stress, imposter syndrome and decision-making throughout the month of November.

November 7: Through this workshop, participants will confront their fears of getting started with job and internship applications by learning how to effectively write a resume. This workshop will focus on both content and format, putting special emphasis on how to communicate skills and abilities with limited formal experience. Younkin Success Center Room 220, 4:00-5:15.

November 12: Are your career related fears affecting your career wellness? This workshop will help you develop strategies to practice this important dimension of wellness. Younkin Success Center Room 220, 5:00-6:00.

November 13: Imposter Syndrome, the feeling that you will exposed as a fraud, affects many high acheivers as they move into the next steps of their career journey. In this workshop you will learn ways to combat these feelings and build resilience. Younkin Success Center Room 220, 3:30-4:30.

November 21: Are you dreading tough conversations over break about your career and major plans? Learn strategies to navigate these interactions effectively. Younkin Success Center Room 220, 4:00-5:00.
